1: NISSAN genuine grease or an equivalent.
2: Apply paste [service parts (440037S000)].
: Always replace after every disassembly.

Removal and Installation

WARNING:

  • Jacking up or lift up the vehicle may the vehicle height to go down which cause a personal injury and/or damage to the air suspension component parts. Refer to Precaution for when Jacking and Lifting Up the vehicle with Electronic Air Suspension System.

WITHOUT DYNAMIC DIGITAL SUSPENSION AND ELECTRONIC AIR SUSPENSION

Removal

Remove rear tire. Refer to ROAD WHEEL TIRE : Removal & Installation.

Remove brake hose bracket from suspension arm. Refer to Removal and Installation.

Remove caliper assembly. Hang caliper assembly in a place where it will not interfere with work. Refer to Removal and Installation.

CAUTION:

Never depress brake pedal while caliper assembly is removed.

Remove disc rotor.

CAUTION:

  • Put matching marks on the wheel hub and bearing assembly and the disc rotor before removing the disc rotor.

  • Never drop disc rotor.

Remove wheel sensor harness. Refer to Removal and Installation.

Put matching mark on drive shaft and wheel hub and bearing assembly.

CAUTION:

Use paint or similar substance for matching marks. Never scratch the surface.

Using lock nut chisel [SST: KV40108800 ( − )] (A), release stacked area of wheel hub lock nut.

CAUTION:

  • Completely release the caulking part of the wheel hub lock nut.

  • Never add damage to the driveshaft side screw thread with wheel hub lock nut.

NOTE:

Stacked area is about (A) of the wheel hub lock nut should be widened 34 mm (1.34 in) or more.

Loosen wheel hub lock nut, using a hub lock nut wrench [SST: KV40104001 (NI-53385)] (A).

CAUTION:

  • Never use a power tool.

  • When rotation of locknut does not turn smoothly, release stacked area is performed again.

Set suitable jack under rear lower link.

CAUTION:

  • Never damage rear lower link.

  • Check the stable condition when using a jack.

Remove rear lower link and coil spring. Refer to Removal and Installation.

Using jack to front lower link.

Loosen the front lower link frame side bolt.

Remove cotter pin and nut, and remove front lower link from axle housing.

CAUTION:

Never damage ball joint boot.

Remove cotter pin and nut, and remove suspension arm from axle housing.

Patch wheel hub lock nut with a piece of wood. Hammer the wood to disengage wheel hub and bearing assembly from drive shaft. Take out the wheel hub lock nut.

CAUTION:

  • Never place drive shaft joint at an extreme angle. Also be careful not to overextend slide joint.

  • Never allow drive shaft to hang down without support for counterpart such as joint sub-as- sembly, and other parts.

NOTE:

Use a suitable puller, if the wheel hub and bearing assembly and drive shaft cannot be separated even after performing the above procedure.

Remove axle housing assembly.

Remove drive shaft from rear final drive assembly.

  • Use the drive shaft attachment [SST: KV40107500 ( − )] (A) and a sliding hammer (commercial service tool) (B) while inserting tip of the drive shaft attachment between housing and rear final drive assembly.

    CAUTION:

    • Never place drive shaft joint at an extreme an- gle when removing drive shaft. Also be careful not to overextend slide joint.

    • Confirm that the circular clip is attached to the drive shaft.

    Use paint or similar substance for matching marks. Never scratch the surface.

Perform inspection after removal. Refer to Inspection.

Installation

WHEEL SIDE

Note the following, and install in the reverse order of removal.

  • Clean the matching surface of wheel hub lock nut and wheel hub and bearing assembly.

    CAUTION:

    Never apply lubricating oil to these matching surface.

  • Clean the matching surface of drive shaft and wheel hub and bearing assembly. And then apply paste [service parts (440037S000)] to surface of joint sub-assembly of drive shaft.

    CAUTION:

    Apply paste to cover entire flat surface of joint sub-assembly of drive shaft.

    Amount paste 1.0 – 3.0 g (0.04 – 0.10 oz)
  • When installing drive shaft to wheel hub, never align drive shaft staked area and one of hub bolts .

  • Use the following torque range for tightening the wheel hub lock nut.

    : 218 – 223 N·m (22 – 23 kg-m, 161 – 164 ft-lb)

    CAUTION:

    • Never reuse wheel hub lock nut.

    • Since the drive shaft is assembled by press-fitting, use the tightening torque range for the wheel hub lock nut.

    • Be sure to use torque wrench to tighten the wheel hub lock nut. Never use a power tool.

    NOTE:

    Wheel hub lock nut tightening torque does not over torque for avoiding axle noise, and does not less than torque for avoiding looseness.

  • Using lock nut crimp punch [SST: KV40108700 ( − )] (A), stake wheel hub lock nut and drive shaft staked area.

    NOTE:

    Use the following range for stacking the whell hub lock nut.

    A : 6.2 mm (0.244 in)
    B : 29.4 – 30.8 mm (1.157 – 1.213 in)
  • Perform the final tightening of each of parts under unladen conditions, which were removed when removing wheel hub and bearing assembly and axle housing.

FINAL DRIVE SIDE

Note the following, and install in the reverse order of removal.

CAUTION:

Always replace rear final drive assembly side oil seal with new one when installing drive shaft. Refer to Removal and Installation.

  • Place the protector [SST: KV38108000 ( - )] (A) onto rear final drive assembly to prevent damage to the rear final drive assembly side oil seal while inserting drive shaft. Slide drive shaft sliding joint and tap with a hammer to install securely.

    CAUTION:

    Be sure to fully install the protector into the depths of the part.

    WARNING:

    Ensure that circular clip is properly engaged, otherwise the joint sub-assembly could pull away from transaxle during vehicle operation resulting in loss of drive force and possible drive shaft damage, which may cause a crash and serious injury or damage the drive shaft.

    CAUTION:

    • To ensure the circular clip is properly engaged, grasp the housing and pull back and forth in axial direction while listening for clicking sounds.

      : Wheel side

    • Pull the joint sub-assembly in the axial direction away from rear final drive assembly (arrow). Confirm that the joint sub assembly cannot be pulled out.

WITH DYNAMIC DIGITAL SUSPENSION AND ELECTRONIC AIR SUSPENSION

Removal

Start engine.

Turn auto height mode control switch to ON, shift the shift position to N and set to normal height.

Turn OFF the electronic air suspension function. Refer to Operation.

Stop engine.

Lift up the vehicle.

Remove rear tire. Refer to ROAD WHEEL TIRE : Removal & Installation.

Remove brake hose bracket from suspension arm. Refer to Removal and Installation.

Remove caliper assembly. Hang caliper assembly in a place where it will not interfere with work. Refer to Removal and Installation.

CAUTION:

Never depress brake pedal while caliper assembly is removed.

Remove disc rotor.

CAUTION:

  • Put matching marks on the wheel hub and bearing assembly and the disc rotor before removing the disc rotor.

  • Never drop disc rotor.

Remove wheel sensor harness. Refer to Removal and Installation.

Put matching mark on drive shaft and wheel hub and bearing assembly.

CAUTION:

Use paint or similar substance for matching marks. Never scratch the surface.

Using lock nut chisel [SST: KV40108800 ( − )] (A), release stacked area of wheel hub lock nut.

CAUTION:

  • Completely release the caulking part of the wheel hub lock nut.

  • Never add damage to the driveshaft side screw thread with wheel hub lock nut.

NOTE:

Stacked area is about (A) of the wheel hub lock nut should be widened 34 mm (1.34 in) or more.

Loosen wheel hub lock nut, using a hub lock nut wrench [SST: KV40104001 (NI-53385)] (A).

CAUTION:

  • Never use a power tool.

  • When rotation of locknut does not turn smoothly, release stacked area is performed again.

Support the rear lower link with suitable jack (A) until most horizontal angle with vehicle on the ground.

CAUTION:

  • Never damage rear lower link.

  • Check the stable condition when using a suitable jack.

  • Never lower the suitable jack until installation is completed.

Loosen the air connector and perform air bleeding.

CAUTION:

  • Be careful since air flows swiftly from air tube.

  • Loosen the air connector slowly.

  • Never disconnect the air connector until the air completely bleeds.

Remove air tube together with air connector from air spring .

CAUTION:

  • Never damage air connector, air adapter, and air tube.

  • When reusing air connector, never remove air tube from air connector.

  • If you remove the air tube from the air connector, be sure to replace the air connector.

  • Seal remove part using vinyl tape for preventing dirt from getting the remove part.

NOTE:

The air connector can be reused as long as you never remove air tube from air connector.

Loosen rear lower link mounting nuts (frame side). Refer to Removal and Installation.

Remove rear lower link from axle housing. Refer to Removal and Installation.

Using jack to front lower link.

Loosen the front lower link frame side bolt.

Remove cotter pin and nut, and remove front lower link from axle housing.

Remove cotter pin and nut, and remove suspension arm from axle housing.

Patch wheel hub lock nut with a piece of wood. Hammer the wood to disengage wheel hub and bearing assembly from drive shaft. Take out the wheel hub lock nut.

CAUTION:

  • Never place drive shaft joint at an extreme angle. Also be careful not to overextend slide joint.

  • Never allow drive shaft to hang down without support for counterpart such as Joint sub-assembly, and other parts.

NOTE:

Use a suitable puller, if the wheel hub and bearing assembly and drive shaft cannot be separated even after performing the above procedure.

Remove axle housing assembly.

Remove drive shaft from rear final drive assembly.

  • Use the drive shaft attachment [SST: KV40107500 ( − )] (A) and a sliding hammer (commercial service tool) (B) while inserting tip of the drive shaft attachment between housing and rear final drive assembly.

CAUTION:

  • Never place drive shaft joint at an extreme an- gle when removing drive shaft. Also be careful not to overextend slide joint.

  • Confirm that the circular clip is attached to the drive shaft.

Perform inspection after removal. Refer to Inspection.

Installation

CAUTION:

Always replace rear final drive assembly side oil seal with new one when installing drive shaft. Refer to Removal and Installation.

Install drive shaft to rear final drive assembly, follow the note below.

  • Place the protector [SST: KV38108000 ( - )] (A) onto rear final drive assembly to prevent damage to the rear final drive assembly side oil seal while inserting drive shaft. Slide drive shaft sliding joint and tap with a hammer to install securely.

CAUTION:

Be sure to fully install the protector into the depths of the part.

WARNING:

Install axle housing assembly.

Install drive shaft to wheel hub and bearing assembly, follow the note below.

  • Clean the matching surface of wheel hub lock nut and wheel hub and bearing assembly.

    CAUTION:

    Never apply lubricating oil to these matching surface.

  • Clean the matching surface of drive shaft and wheel hub and bearing assembly. And then apply paste [service parts (440037S000)] to surface of joint sub-assembly of drive shaft.

    CAUTION:

    Apply paste to cover entire flat surface of joint sub-assembly of drive shaft.

    Amount paste 1.0 – 3.0 g (0.04 – 0.10 oz)
  • When installing drive shaft to wheel hub, never align drive shaft staked area and one of hub bolts .

    CAUTION:

    Align the matching marks made during removal when reusing the wheel hub and bearing assembly.

Install cotter pin and nut, and install suspension arm to axle housing.

Install cotter pin and nut, and install front lower link to axle housing.

Tighten front lower link mounting nuts (frame side).

Install rear lower link to axle housing. Refer to Removal and Installation.

Tighten rear lower link mounting nuts (frame side). Refer to Removal and Installation.

Install wheel hub lock nut, follow the note below.

  • Use the following torque range for tightening the wheel hub lock nut.

    : 218 – 223 N·m (22 – 23 kg-m, 161 – 164 ft-lb)

Install disc rotor.

CAUTION:

Align the matching marks made during removal when reusing the disc rotor.

Install brake caliper assembly. Refer to Removal and Installation.

Install brake hose bracket to suspension arm. Refer to Removal and Installation.

Install air tube and air connector together to air spring .

CAUTION:

  • Never damage air connector and air tube.

  • If you remove the air tube from the air connector, be sure to replace the air connector.

  • Never let foreign materials entered into parts.

Start engine.

Use CONSULT and fill the inner pressure of air spring to 3.3 bar. Refer to Work Support.

Remove suitable jack from rear lower link.

Use CONSULT and fill the inner pressure of air spring to 3.3 bar. Refer to Work Support.

Stop engine.

Install rear tire. Refer to ROAD WHEEL TIRE : Removal & Installation.

Lift down the vehicle.

Start engine.

Perform pressure measurements using CONSULT. Refer to Work Support.

NOTE:

Confirm that "Air suspension internal pressure judgement" is OK.

Perform the height sensor calibration using CONSULT. Refer to Work Support.

Use CONSULT and vehicle to the normal height. Refer to Work Support.

Turn ON the electronic air suspension function. Refer to Operation.

Stop engine.

Perform the final tightening of each of parts under unladen conditions, which were removed when removing wheel hub and bearing assembly and axle housing.

Perform inspection after installation. Refer to Inspection.

Disassembly and Assembly

WHEEL SIDE

Disassembly

Fix shaft with a vise.

CAUTION:

Protect shaft when fixing with a vise using aluminum or copper plates.

Remove dust shield from joint sub-assembly.

Remove boot bands and then remove boot from joint sub-assembly.

Screw the drive shaft puller (commercial service tool) (A) 30 mm (1.18 in) or more into the thread of joint sub-assembly, and remove joint sub-assembly from shaft.

CAUTION:

  • If joint sub-assembly cannot be removed after five or more unsuccessful attempts, replace shaft and joint sub assembly as a set.

  • Align sliding hammer and drive shaft and remove them by pulling directory.

Remove circular clip from shaft.

Remove boot from shaft.

Assembly

Clean old grease on joint sub-assembly with paper waste.

Fill serration slot joint sub-assembly with NISSAN genuine grease or equivalent until the serration slot and ball groove become full to the brim.

CAUTION:

After applying grease, use a shop cloth to wipe off old grease that has oozed out.

Install boot and boot bands to shaft.

CAUTION:

  • Wrap serration on shaft with tape to protect the boot from damage.

  • Never reuse boot and boot band.

Remove the tape wrapped around the serrated on shaft.

Position circular clip on groove at the shaft edge.

CAUTION:

Never reuse circular clip.

NOTE:

Drive joint inserter is recommended when installing circular clip.

Align both center axles of the shaft edge and joint sub-assembly. Then assemble shaft with circular clip joint sub-assembly.

Install joint sub-assembly to shaft using plastic hammer.

WARNING:

Ensure that circular clip is properly engaged, otherwise the joint sub-assembly could pull away from transaxle during vehicle operation resulting in loss of drive force and possible drive shaft damage, which may cause a crash and serious injury or damage the drive shaft.

Pull the joint sub-assembly in the axial direction away from transaxle assembly. Confirm that the joint sub assembly cannot be pulled out.

Apply the balance of the specified amount of grease into the boot inside from large diameter side of boot.

Grease amount : Refer to Drive Shaft.

Install the boot securely into grooves (indicated by “*” marks) shown in the figure.

CAUTION:

If grease adheres to the boot mounting surface (indicated by “*” mark) on the shaft or housing, boot may come off. Remove all grease from the surfaces.

To prevent the deformation of the boot, adjust the boot installation length (L) to the specified value shown below by inserting the suitable tool into inside of the boot from the large diameter side of boot and discharging the inside air.

L : Refer to Drive Shaft.

CAUTION:

  • If the boot installation length is outside the standard, it may cause breakage of the boot.

  • Never touch the inside of the boot with the tip of tool.

Securely the boot with boot bands using the boot band crimp tool [SST: KV40107300 (NI-51751)] (A).

CAUTION:

  • Never reuse boot band.

  • Install boot band so that staked area is as shown in the figure.

Specified value  
M : 1.0 - 4.0 mm (0.04 - 0.16 in)

Secure joint sub-assembly and shaft, and then make sure that they are in the correct position when rotating boot. Install them with boot band when boot installation positions become incorrect.

CAUTION:

Never reuse boot band.

Install dust shield to joint sub-assembly.

CAUTION:

Never reuse dust shield.

FINAL DRIVE SIDE

Disassembly

Fix shaft with a vise.

CAUTION:

Protect shaft when fixing with a vise using aluminum or copper plates.

Remove circular clip from housing.

Remove dust shield from housing.

Remove boot bands, and then remove boot from housing.

Put matching marks on housing and shaft.

CAUTION:

Use paint or similar substance for matching marks. Never scratch the surface.

Remove stopper ring with suitable tool, and pull out housing.

Put matching marks on ball cage/steel ball/inner race assembly and shaft.

CAUTION:

Use paint or similar substance for matching marks. Never scratch the surface.

Remove snap ring, then remove ball cage/steel ball/inner race assembly from shaft.

Remove boot from shaft.

Assembly

Remove old grease on housing with paper waste.

Install boot and boot bands to shaft.

CAUTION:

  • Wrap serration shaft with tape to protect the boot from damage.

  • Never reuse boot and boot band.

Remove the tape wrapped around the serrated on shaft.

Install ball cage/steel ball/inner race assembly , align it with the matching marks on shaft put during the removal.

Secure ball cage/steel ball/inner race assembly onto shaft with snap ring .

CAUTION:

Never reuse snap ring.

Apply the appropriate amount of grease onto housing and sliding surface.

Grease amount : Refer to Drive Shaft.

Install housing.

Install stopper ring to housing.

CAUTION:

Never reuse stopper ring.

After installed, pull shaft to check engagement between housing and stopper ring.

Install boot securely into grooves (indicated by “*” marks) shown in the figure.

CAUTION:

If grease adheres to the boot mounting surfaces (indicated by “*” marks) on shaft or housing, boot may be removed. Remove all grease from the surfaces.

To prevent the deformation of the boot, adjust the boot installation length (L) to the value shown below by inserting the suitable tool into the inside of boot from the large diameter side of boot and discharging inside air.

L : Refer to Drive Shaft.

CAUTION:

  • If the boot installation length is outside the standard, it may cause breakage of the boot.

  • Be careful not to touch the inside of the boot with the tip of tool.

Secure the large and small ends of the boot with boot bands using the boot band crimp tool [SST: KV40107300 (NI-51751)] (A).

CAUTION:

  • Never reuse boot band.

  • Install boot band so that staked area is as shown in the figure.

Specified value  
M : 1.0 - 4.0 mm (0.04 - 0.16 in)

Check that location stays in the correct position when housing and shaft are secured and boot is rotated.

CAUTION:

  • Install again when location does not stay in the correct position.

  • Never reuse boot band.

Install circular clip to housing.

CAUTION:

Never reuse circular clip.

Install dust shield to housing.

CAUTION:

Never reuse dust shield.

Perform inspection after assembly. Refer to Inspection.

Inspection

INSPECTION AFTER REMOVAL

  • Move joint up/down, left/right, and in the axial direction. Check for any rough movement or significant looseness.

  • Check boot for cracks or other damage, and also for grease leakage.

  • If a malfunction is found, disassemble drive shaft, and then replace with new one.

INSPECTION AFTER DISASSEMBLY

Shaft

Check shaft for runout, cracks, or other damage. Replace if there are any abnormal condition.

Joint Sub-Assembly (Wheel Side)

Check the following:

  • Joint sub-assembly for rough rotation and excessive axial looseness.

  • The inside of the joint sub-assembly for entry of foreign material.

  • Joint sub-assembly for compression scars, cracks, and fractures inside of joint sub-assembly.

Replace joint sub-assembly if there are any non-standard conditions of components.

Housing and Ball cage/steel ball/inner race assembly (Final Drive Side)

Replace housing and ball cage/steel ball/inner race assembly if there is scratching or wear of housing steel ball contact surface or steel ball.

INSPECTION AFTER INSTALLATION

  1. Check wheel alignment. Refer to Inspection.

  2. Perform the height sensor calibration. (With dynamic digital suspension and electronic air suspension) Refer to Work Support.
